HIGH SCHOOL TUTORING
While there are many reasons for high school students to seek tutoring, most of the students I tutor aim to achieve top grades to secure admission to their preferred universities. Students can choose one or both components.
COMPONENT 1: School work support. Before tutoring sessions, students review school materials first and identify areas of concern. Depending on a student’s learning style, I can provide direct instruction, ask guiding questions, troubleshoot students' work, or provide examples. Beyond understanding concepts and bridging knowledge gaps; tips and tricks are also taught.
COMPONENT 2: Learning ahead. Given the fast-paced nature of today's schooling system, especially in semester-based schools, some students choose to proactively learn ahead. This approach not only gives them a head start but also boosts their confidence. Pre-learning is also particularly advantageous for students hoping to build a stronger foundation before enrollment in summer school.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TUTORING
Tutoring for elementary school students (Grade 6 and above) consists of one or more of the following components. Students can choose one or more components. Most of my students work on component 2 .
COMPONENT 1: Schoolwork support. Students send me their schoolwork in advance. During tutoring sessions, I address their queries, ensure comprehension, and bridge knowledge gaps. Additional homework may also be assigned to reinforce concepts.
*COMPONENT 1 is the least popular option.
COMPONENT 2: Foundation building. A rock-solid foundation in elementary Mathematics is crucial for a successful transition to more advanced Math and a long-term goal of math mastery in high school and beyond. In this foundation-building component, students learn 1 – 2 Math topics every session, in addition to what they learn from school. Tutoring content can be challenging or remedial depending on a child’s needs. Homework sheets will be provided. Students are to complete and submit them before the next class.
Common Math topics include fractions, decimals, percent, geometry, data analysis, ratios, algebra, measurement, financial literacy, patterns, word problems, etc. Homework sheets come from CorbettMaths, IXL, and a variety of effective resources that I have collected and used over the years.
*COMPONENT 2 is the most popular/effective option.
COMPONENT 3: Math contests (up to Grade 8 only). Students with a keen interest in mathematics are encouraged to participate in math competitions such as the Gauss Contest (University of Waterloo), Beaver Computing Challenge (University of Waterloo), American Math Contest 8, Math League Contest, Elmacon Contest, and others. I can assist in preparing for these contests by working through past years' questions. Math contests can enhance problem-solving abilities, train students to persevere through challenging problems, and ignite a greater interest in Mathematics.
COMPONENT 4: SSAT Test Prep. I have successfully helped many students achieve top scores in the SSAT and gain admission to their preferred top private schools (Crofton House, West Point Grey Academy, St. Georges, York House School, Collingwood School) using the SSAT Official Guide as the primary resource. To prepare for the SSAT test, students must have a strong foundation in mathematics. For those without a strong foundation, we will begin with foundation building (component 2), which takes around one year. As the SSAT is a highly competitive test, I can enhance the likelihood of maximizing your score, and not guarantee success.
